Annual Championships Response Strong

September 12, 2011 - Response to the 12th annual Atlantic Stock Car Championships (Oct 1st thru the 9th) were strong this past weekend from both fans and drivers.  CFS staff were in attendance at two weekend events in Nova Scotia and at Oyster Bed, PEI where response was strong, once again, for the "not to be missed" event.

Improvements made to the event in the last few years,  enhancements made to the speedway this year, and the addition of another weekend to allow a reduction of classes racing on each day were sited as  contributing factors to the continued strong interest across a broad array of divisions and all across the Atlantic.  In reference to one improvement one driver commented, "I thought you were into a 'bad batch of drugs' when I saw that you had changed the track..." said Gary Stewart of PEI, a seasonsed racer, whose wife (Shelley) also races in the AOW Tour.  "...but that was before I saw the racing.  It was awesome!" He continued.  "Everyone was close and the racing was tight.  It was the best I've ever seen there" he concluded.  Other changes have also been well received by the drivers and fans after some pre season concerns.  The changes include a pit area upgrade (which improved drainage that lets the pits dry within a few hours after heavy rain) and a paved entry road (which elinimated excess dust) into the fan parking area.

Based on early response the speedway is hoping for strong attendance from fans  and drivers. Fans who are travelling are urged to book their accomodations early, as a result.  Fifty rough camping sites have been designated at the speedway and will be available at a cost of $20 including access from Sept 24th to Oct 9th throughout all "Speed Weeks" events including the "Monster Truck weekend" on Sept 24/25.  Campers will also be provided with free firewood, courtesay of the grandstand renewal.

For questions or to reserve a camping spot call the speedway at 506 388-2415.

Thilling Action at the CENTRE

Aug 14th, 2011 - Action at the "Centre" was filled with tight, side-by-side racing, and exciting action on Sunday. The AOW Modifieds were the featured attraction and they did not disappoint, putting on a classic demonstration of why racing is one of the top sporting events in North America.

Joe Hoyt was a powerhouse, winning his Heat and the Semi, and was well on his way to another convincing victory in the Feature, until he was caught up in a wreck coming into turn four, ending his day prematurely. Paul Costain then took over the lead on the restart and went on to Victory Lane. Mike Raeburn came home second in the feature. Shelley Stewart captured the win in the other Heat along with third in the Feature while Jamie Weston had second in his Heat. Costain had a pair of thirds in Heat and Semi action while Jamie Brown picked up second in the Semi.

In Shediac Sportsman action, with a first in the Heat and seconds in the Semi and Feature. Don Marcoux added a second in the Heat and second in the Semi while Tyler Rossiter had a pair of third place finishes, in the semi and feature. Martin Landry picked up a third in the Heat race. Earlier in the day it loooked as though Landry's chances for the win were snuffed when he too a high line on the outside while tryiong to overtake the leader but couldn't hold the 00 machine on the track through turn four, careening out of control and into the safety pit on the back stretch and slapping the right front of the car up against the wall. Thankfully the safety pit did its job and with only superficialy damage the rookie driver was back out for the feature. It was Landry's first feature win in the division since moving up this year.

In Mini Stock racing, Gerard Brun made his presence felt in his return to racing at Atlantic Canada's biggest stock car oval, capturing wins in the Heat and Feature to go along with a third in the Semi. Scott Bourque and Julien LeBlanc continued their torrid battle for the points championship. Leblanc added a third, a first and a second in the Feature to his totals while Bourque had two seconds and a third for his efforts.

Justin MacDonald had a second and two victories in "Four Fun" action while Eldon Campbell had a third and a pair of second place finishes. PE Islander, Don Gaudet had a win in Heat and a third in the Feature while Ryan Bourque picked up a third in the semi to round out the podium finishes.

Scott Bourque records "Grand Slam"
Black Flags Fly in Shediac as Bourque scores “Grand Slam” Sunday August 7th

(Grand Barachois, NB)  -  Despite deteriorating weather throughout the day including a minor rain delay it was an exciting day of racing featuring local and visiting drivers during the POGO Inivtational 50's here at the CENTRE for Speed.

Scott Bourque of Cap Pele, piloted his 69 Ministock to a “Grand Slam” in the MiniStock division edging out Josh Simon (#71) of Boucthouche at the finish line by less than a 12" margin to capture a perfect day.  Julien Leblanc (#07) of Haute Aboujagane picked up seconds in the Heat and Semi and a third in the Feature. Simon also had a strong day, picking up thirds in the Heat and semi, coupled with a second in the Feature.

Scott Hall (#98) of Sackville, NB returned to success on Sunday as well as he piloted his Chevy to wins in the Heat and Semi in the Four Fun Division before a collision in the Feature 50 lap with his arch rival from Springhill, Justin MacDonald (#7) put him on the sidelines for the rest of the day.  The two top competitors in the division have had a running fued since the beginning of the season.  MacDonald and Hall were awarded with a  Black Flag for the altercation and retaliation that followed and their day was ended early.  Dave Matthews (#99) of Halifax had a great day winning the feature and picking up a second in the Heat, and a third in the Semi.  Macdonald (#7) picked up a third in the Heat and a Second in the Semi , while Cody Bourque (#6) of Grand Barachois almost won the feature but was edged out by Matthews.  Bourque grabbed second in the Feature. Jeremy Hallett (#73), another Halifax regular, picked up a third in the Feature to round out the placings.

In Sportsman action, Don Marcoux (#27) of Saint Marie picked up wins in the Heat and Semi and added a second in the Feature, for another fine performance. Martin Landry (#00) of Grand Barachois also had a good day, picking up seconds in the Heat and Semi, but a naging mechanical problem continued to hinder Landry's quest for a feature win forcing him to retire midway through the final race. Cape Bretoner, Mike MacLeod (#17), however put on a great performance to claim victory in the final event of the day for the division starting on the pole and leading for most of the event.

The Sportsman had originally been scheduled for a day off this weekend, but requests from a couple of drivers got them added to the schedule mid week. Unfortunately, two big Sportsman events on Saturday evening, left several cars unable to compete and as a result, only three Sportsman were able to compete. What they lacked in numbers though, they made up for, in great competition. Robert Raynes picked up the win in the Heat, along with a third in the Feature. Bert Cormier captured victory in the Feature, to go with a second in the Heat, while Craig Ward picked up a third and a second for his efforts.

One of the highlights of the day was the “Kids Hotshoe” race. The biggest cheers went out to the youngest competitor, a little girl around two, who completed half the race distance of one lap. Over fifty youngsters from throughout the region took part in the event.

At the completion of racing, fans were treated to a burnout display by Josh Gaudet of Shediac and Kirk Mullane of Halifax.  Both left the fans cheering for more.

Next week, the Open Wheel Modified Tour invades the Centre for the third time this season, and the action promises to be “hot and heavy”. Buyer Flyer Points Championship racing in all divisions is also on the schedule.  It is also a speedway “Community Day” for families from Postal Codes E5A through E5Z who receive free entry just by showing their valid address via a drivers license.See you at the CENTRE!

Super Sportsman 100 race winner Bill sommerville

Sommerville Captures Race; Rankin Captures Championship

Sunday’s final leg of the Maritime Sportsman Series at Centre for Speed was an extremely exciting affair with 17 Super Sportsmen taking the green flag. In the early going, John Rankin took the lead and for a short while, it looked like he was going to run away from everybody. However, slowly but surely, the #11 machine of Cal Hatfield chased him down and took over the lead. Midway through the race, the wiley veteran, Bill Sommerville, assumed the lead and despite the best efforts of several competitors, Sommerville hung on for victory.

Calvin Rankin, winner of the first two legs of this series, methodically worked his way through the pack and captured second place for his efforts. This ensured Rankin that the Championship was his for 2011. John Rankin fought back to claim third place on the day.

Earlier, John Rankin, Luc Bourgeois, and Cal Hatfield captured wins in qualifying heats while Bert Cormier came home victorious in the last chance qualifier.

In Ministock action, Scott Bourque came home with victories in the Ministock Heat and Semi, while Julien LeBlanc captured the Feature. In “Four Fun” action, Justin MacDonald recorded a “Grand Slam”, winning all three events.

James “Cooter” Smith continued his winning ways in the Shediac Sportsman (Street Stock) class, capturing the Heat and the Feature. Rookie competitor Martin Landry captured victory in the Shediac Sportsman Semi and was a force to be reckoned with in both the Heat and feature, until mechanical problems forced him to the sidelines in the Feature. After the race, Smith stated that Landry would have won, if not for the mechanical issues. Rick cashol, a regular at Speedway 660, made the trip to CFS for this weekend and grabbed second in the Feature while Don Marcoux came home third in the 50 lap event.

Action Galore At the CENTRE

July 24, 2011 (Shediac) - Under warm and sunny skies, all regular divisions took to the track for Points Championship racing on Sunday afternoon.  Car counts were a bit smaller for the first time this season but the grandstands reflected a continuing increase in fans week over week as the order of the day was, once again, highly competitive racing with lots of action.

In “Four Fun” action, Scott Hall was the big winner, capturing the Feature and the Semi final along with a second his Heat. Justin MacDonald also had a strong day, winning the Heat and finishing second in the Semi and feature. Wilfred Simon picked up thirds in all three “Four Fun” events for a successful day as well.

In “Ministock” action, Scott Bourque piloted his 69 machine to wins in the Heat and Feature while Julien LeBlanc captured the victory in the Semi final. LeBlanc also had seconds in the Heat and Feature after some very heated and exciting battles with Bourque. Josh Collins picked up third place finishes in all three races while the 95 of Denis LeBlanc came home second in the semi final.

The Shediac Sportsmen waged a tremendous battle with the 27 of Don Marcoux emerging victorious all three times for a “grand slam” day. James “Cooter” Smith grabbed second place in all three  events while Martin Landry brought home third place honours in all three races.

The Super Sportsman division also saw close, side by side action, with Robert Raynes taking the win in the Heat, Bert Cormier in the semi final, and Craig Ward in the Feature. STEWART RECORDS AOW MODIFIED GRAND SLAM WHILE SMITH PICKS UP SECOND STRAIGHT FEATURE WIN AT CFS

July 17, 2011 (Shediac, N.B.) -- Shelly Stewart (#43) of Emerald, PEI showed the boys how to get it done by recording a grand slam during the Area Food Bank Atlantic Open Wheel (AOW) Modified stock car racing event held at the Centre for Speed’s (CFS) in Grand Barachois, N.B. on Sunday afternoon.

Meanwhile, James Smith (#50) of Riverview picked up his second career feature win in the 35-lap Shediac Sportsman / Streetstock to go along with a first place finish in the heat.

In Atlantic Open Wheel (AOW) Modified action, Stewart who was a regular Street Stock competitor at CFS a few years ago, picked up her first feature win in the 35-lap feature thanks to a great jump on the green flag to start the event. Stewart, who started the race on the outside front row, powered quickly into turn #1 to take the lead from pole sitter Doug Matchett (#75) of Miramichi and then, she never looked back. However, Jamie Brown (#48) of St. Martins, N.B. did make it interesting in the later stages of the event when he challenged Stewart for the lead over the final few laps, but the PEI driver was able to hold off Brown at the finish line with Jamie Weston (#22) also of St. Martin’s coming home in third. Stewart had earlier captured wins in the 10-lap first heat and the 12-lap semi-final while Paul Costain (#64) of Moncton was the winner of the second heat.

In Shediac Sportsman / Streetstock action, James ‘Cooter’ Smith (#50) of Riverview followed up his first career feature win last week with his second main event win in a row after a hard-fought battle with rookie Martin Landry (#00) of Grand Barachois. Landry, who had earlier recorded his first ever division win in the semi-final, led the most laps in the main event, but had to settled for second after Smith got a great jump on the green flag during a late-race restart. Tyler Rossiter (#14) of Weldon, N.B. took home the third place hardware.

It was also an afternoon to remember for Justin MacDonald (#7) of Springhill, N.S. who recorded his first career feature win in the 35-lap Four Fun division main event to go along with a win in the semi-final and a second place finish in the heat. In the feature, MacDonald crossed the stripe ahead of Kyle MacMillan (#5) of Hammonds Plains, N.S. and last week’s feature winner Brandon Skidmore (#4) Springhill, N.S. Meanwhile, Scott Hall (#98) of Sackville was victorious in the 10-lap heat.

In Mini Stock action, Julien Leblanc (#07) of Haute Aboujagane picked up his third feature win of the season in the 35-lap main event after coming home second in the heat and third in the semi-final. Scott Bourque (#69) of Cap-Pelé, who picked up two first place finishes in the heat and semi-final, had to settle for second in the feature with veteran Brad Daley (#66) of Saint John crossing the stripe third in the main event.

Racing resumes next Sunday July 24 at 2:00 p.m. with points championship racing in all four CFS stock car divisions.

July 10, 2011 (Shediac, N.B.)  -- James Smith (#50) and Brandon Skidmore (#4) stood triumphantly in the winner’s circle on Sunday afternoon after capturing their first career feature wins in their respective division during the Cavendish Farms PEI Invitational stock car racing event at the Centre for Speed’s (CFS) in Grand Barachois, N.B.

James ‘Cooter’ Smith (#50) of Riverview credited the hard work of his and other competitor’s pit crews for his first career feature win in Shediac Sportsman / Streetstock action and he dedicated the win to his one-year old son who is battling s number of life threatening illnesses. “This win is absolutely awesome,” exclaimed Smith after letting out a few high pitched yells to punctuate his historic win. “We are so blessed that our son Colton just celebrated his first-birthday and continues to battle bravely through various trips to the Toronto Sick Kids hospital. That’s why I am dedicating this win to Colton – our brave little angel.”

James, his wife Melissa along with friends and family have been actively raising funds for the many trips to and from Toronto over the past year and donations are always welcomed at www.wix.com/coltonscause/home

In the 35-lap feature, Smith crossed the stripe ahead of defending points champion Don Marcoux (#27) of St.-Louis-de-Kent and Rod Petitgrew (#7) of Amherst. Smith had earlier captured the win in the 10-lap heat while Petitgrew was victorious in the semi-final.

It was also an afternoon to remember for Brandon Skidmore (#4) o Springhill, N.S. as he also recorded his first career victory in the 35-lap Four Fun division feature. Skidmore found himself leading the event with 8 laps to go after co-leaders Scott Hall (#98) of Sackville and Justin MacDonald (#7) of Springhill, N.S. were both disqualified for rough driving as they battled for the lead. Skidmore, who had claimed second in the semi and third in the heat, ended up crossing the finish line ahead of Serge Robichaud (#63) of Pointe Sapîn and Ernest Bourque (#6) of Cap-Pelé. MacDonald had earlier recorded in his first career win in the 10-lap heat while Ryan Bourque (#9) of Cap-Pelé was victorious in the semi final.

In Mini Stock action, Scott Bourque (#69) of Cap-Pelé picked up two wins including his second feature win of the season by outdistancing Julien Leblanc (#07) of Haute Aboujagane and Josh Simon (#71) of Bouctouche at the finish line in the 35-lap event. Bourque had earlier picked up the checkered flag in the semi final while Stéphane Leblanc (#3) of Memramcook came home first in the 10-lap heat.

In Super Sportsman action, defending points champion Luc Bourgeois (#88) of Memramcook notched his first feature win of the season thanks to a daring three-wide pass at the midway mark of the 35-lap event. Bourgeois was first across the stripe ahead of Ron Lane (#46) of Pine Glen, N.B. and Craig Ward (#02) of Riverview. Ward had earlier captured the first place hardware in the semi-final while Lane had picked up a win in the first heat. Rookie Robert Raynes (#41) of Saint John notched his first career Super Sportsman win in the second 10-lap heat.

"Racin" Calvin Rankin Takes $1500 Top Prize

Shediac - July 3rd, 2011 - It was a great day of racing at the CENTRE for Speed Entertainment Park in Grand Barachois as car counts continued to grow week over week in all divisions and new drivers continued to get their shot to stand on the podium.   Race II of the Maritime Super Series once again saw the hot foot go to Calvin Rankin (#45) of Quispamsis who managed a pass on lap 97 of the 100 lap feature event to overtake a hard running Robert Raynes (#41) of Summerville, NB.   Raynes lead most of the final 50 laps and held off Luc Bourgouis (#88) of Memramcook as they raced side by side for more than 30 laps and several restarts until Bourgeois got the jump on Raynes on a restart at lap 87 and lead the second segment to the end.  Rankin had won the first 50 lap segment and needed to finish 2nd to win the overall 1st place trophy and prize money of $1500.  On lap 97 he was able to get by Raynes (#41)for the win.  Bourgeois who won the second segment finished second overall and Cal Hatfield (#11) of Rothesay was third.  Bourgoius and Dan "Buzzsaw" Bourque (#15) of Grand Digue were heat winners.  Only one car was down laps at the end of the 100 lap event.  "It's a testiment to the competitiveness of this new oval" said Tim Wile, Co-Owner and Promoter.  "It's great for the fans and for the drivers and makes for much better entertainment and a lot more fun than the old oval" he concluded.

In Street Sportsman action it was Don Marcoux of St Louis in his #27 taking the 50 lap feature in convincing fashion holding off several challengers throughout the event from #00 Martin Landry of Grand Barachois, Tyler Rossiter (#14) of Hillsborough and James "Cooter" Smith (#50) of Moncton.  Rossiter and Pettigrew battled for second side by side for multiple laps until Rossiter managed to overtake Pettigrew in the final stages.  The battle for second however gave Marcoux a quarter of a lap lead on Rossiter.  Rossiter managed to close the gap with just 2 laps to challenge for the lead but his tires were too spent fromt the long Battle for second to do more than ride Marcoux's bumper for the those last 2 laps.  Marcoux also won the heat while Smith won the semi.

In Four Cylinder Mini Stock action it was Julien LeBlanc (#07) of Grand Barachois taking his second win of the season with Scott Bourque (#69) finishing second and Stephane LeBlanc (#3) of Memramcook in third.  LeBlanc (#3) won both the heat and semi for a stong day of racing for the rookie.  In the Four Fun division it was it was rookie Scott Hall of Sackville, NB in his #98 continuing his success with Justin MacDonald (#7) of Springhill finishing a close second and Wilf "Superman" Simon (#10) from Bouctouche finishinig a strong third after leading most of the event.  MacDonald won the heat and Hall the semi.

The fund raiser for "Baby Mathis" a local child with a heart disorder was considered a big success by his family with the 50/50 raising just under $500 and with the Winner of the draw (#85) John Baker of Springhill donating his portion back to the family!  The speedway and the family thank everyone who purchased a ticket and a special thank you to you, John.

In others items of interest, the speedway continues to receive accolades from fans and drivers as it continues to make enhancements to the facilty.  "You've got the best track in the Maritimes" said one Saint John area driver.  "It's great to see what you're doing here", he continued.  Another long time fan and racer of over 60 years said "the place looks awesome, Tim.  Keep up the good work.  We love this track".  Finally the ServiceMaster Clean Clean-up crew received compliments from several teams after the event related to how quickly and effectively they cleaned up the track and the quality job they were doing.  The crew was assisted by sponsorship from ServiceMaster which helped with the purchase of new equipment including a high powered jet blower and by the doubling of the crew to six members. Clean-up Director Joel Ferguson said "This new gear is great for big wrecks and the clean-ups that follow them.  When it comes to cautions fans don't want to know that the bigger the track the bigger the clean-up they just want you to get it done and get the action started again.  That's our job.  More staff and this new equipment help us, big time.  I think we're the only track with this type of gear in the Maritimes."

"I love it" exclaimed several of the drivers such as Bouctouches, Denis LeBlanc, Riverviews Craig Ward and Saint John's Brad Daley when asked at the speedways successful on track autograph session last weekend. Other drivers commented positively, en mass with a few still not sure if they prefer the new or the old, yet. BOURQUE AND HALL RECORD GRAND SLAMS DURING ‘SCHOOL’S OUT CELEBRATION’ STOCK CAR ACTION AT CFS

(Shediac, N.B.)  -- While hundreds of young race fans got the thrill of a lifetime with a ride in their favorite drivers’ stock car machine, veterans and rookies shared the spotlight during the Rock Auto / Covered Bridge Potato Chips stock car racing action Sunday afternoon at the Centre for Speed’s (CFS) in Grand Barachois, N.B.

Veteran Dan Bourque (#15) of Grande Digue, who is competing in his 20th season, recorded a grand slam in the Super Sportsman division with wins in the heat, semi-final and 35-lap feature. It was the same for Don Marcoux (#27) of St. Louis de Kent as he continued his early season dominance as the defending champ in the Shediac Sportsman division with his third feature win of the season. Not to be outdone, rookie Scott Hall (#98) of Sackville also picked up another big win in the 50-lap 4-cylinder Four Fun feature.

In Super Sportsman action, Bourque reeled off wins in the 10-lap heat and semi-final, both times outdistancing Bert Cormier (#3) of Bouctouche at the line, before having his hands full in the 35-lap feature with Craig Ward (#02) of Riverview. In the feature, Bourque and Ward battled throughout the event both crossing the stripe in a dead-heat and being declared co-winners of the race ahead of Matt Rodgers (#42), the sophomore 16-year-old from Smithtown, N.B.
Both the Mini Stock and In Four Fun division drivers were put to a serious test with a long and grueling 50-lap feature. In the end, Scott Hall (#98) of Sackville in the Four Funs and Julien Leblanc (#07) of Haute Aboujagane in Mini Stocks walked away with the first place hardware in their respective division, Hall had earlier captured wins in both his heat and semi-final and crossed the stripe ahead of Justin MacDonald (#7) of Springhill, N.S. and Ryan Bourque (#9) of Cap-Pelé. In Mini Stock feature, it was a one-two-three Leblanc finish in the feature with Julien (#07) taking first spot followed closely by Stéphane Leblanc (#3) of Memramcook and Denis Leblanc (#95) of Bouctouche. Denis had earlier claimed the in the 10-lap heat while Stéphane took the checkered in the 10-lap semi-final.

Dominating Performances at Centre for Speed

Scott Hall piloted the number 89 “four fun” machine around the newly reconfigured oval three times for victories on Sunday, giving him a perfect day. Hall was never seriously challanged on this day. Justin MacDonald picked up a pair of seconds in the heat and semi final while Wilfred Simon finished third in the heat and semi final’ before claiming second place in the feature. Ryan Bourque finished third in the feature to round out the podium finishes in this division.

In mini Stock action, Scott Bourque picked up first place finishes in the Heat and semi final before settling for second in the Feature. Stephane Leblanc was second in the Heat and third in the Feature. Julian Leblanc finished third in the Heat but came on strong to capture the win in the Feature while Denis LeBlanc rounded out proceedings with a second in the semi final.

The Street Stock class put on a very entertaining afternoon with side by side battles between Tyler Rossiter and Don Marcoux all the way. Rossiter was victorious in both the Heat and Semi but was forced to accept second in the feature to Marcoux. James “Cooter” Smith finished third in all three events
Jamie Westin drove his #22 AOW Modified into victory Lane twice on Sunday, in his Heat and the semi Final. John Godfrey, the “Homestead Restaurant” man, captured the Feature and the first Heat of the day.

The newly reconfigured oval has been getting rave reviews says track owner Tim Wile.  “Fans have been very receptive to the new configuration. Many positive comments have come in through the track website and several fans have dropped up to the tower to express their satisfaction with the changes.

Racing resumes at the oval next Sunday at 2pm with all 5 divisions in Points Championship action.

FANS COMMENT ON TRACK

June 13, 2011 (Shediac, N.B.) -- After week one of racing at the newly reconfigured track layout, drivers and fans have commented almost unanimously that they like the racing better no with the new changes and that the racing is great, closer and more exciting than before.  "There's no more 'high plains drifting', its tighter and faster and I like that" said one driver.  After this past Sundays event those types of comments should only increase.  The racing in all divisions was, to say the least, entertaining.  The (Shediac) Sportsman and 4 cylinder divisions raced side by side for most of the day with Tyler Rossiter (#14) and Don Marcoux (#27) trading wins in their division and along with newcomer to the track, James "Cooter" Smith the three adding several "hairy" moments of sideways swerving side by side mayhem and action to a day of great racing.  "It doesn't matter where you go, you won't see more exciting racing that these guys put on here today" said owner Tim Wile.  "THAT was worth the very reasonable price of entry and a lot more, in my opinion.  The only thing that can improve that day of racing is more cars and the guys tell us they are almost ready.  I can't wait!"

The new configuration appears to have sparked increased interest in some of the speedways most successful events, also.  For example, the Atlantic Championships have already recieved several registrations.  The earliest in the events 12 year history.

Drivers Catch on Quick

June 5, 2011 - Despite a completely diffrent race track Calvin Rankin (#45) of Quispamsis and the other drivers in attendance on Sunday at the speedways season opener took no time  to get an early jump on this seasons points battles.  Rankin (who also won the last race of the season for sportsman in 2010 at The Atllantic Championships was flawless in his win here on Sunday at the first of three 100 lap Maritime Super Series events.

In 2009, Rankin also recorded a win in the first extended Sportsman race of the season at CFS and, as he did then, he credited his crew for providing him with just the right set-up to enable him to master the newly configured 3/8 mile oval at CFS.

Meanwhile, Scott Bourque (#69) of Cap Pelé made a triumphant début in the Mini Stock division after having captured last year’s Four fun division championship at CFS, by recording a grand slam with wins in the heat, semifinal and 35-lap feature.

In the Maritime Super Series for Sportsman 100, Rankin started on the outside pole and got a great jump on the green flag to gain the lead by the time the cars completed lap one. Then, he held on to the lead for the remaining 99 laps, beating back all challengers, to cross the stripe just ahead of Colby Smith (#77x) of Cape Sable Island, N.S. and defending CFS Super Sportsman champion, Luc Bourgeois (#88) of Memramcook. Both Rankin and Smith had earlier captured wins in their individual 10-lap heats.

In Mini Stock action, Scott Bourque (#69) of Cap Pelé started the season exactly where he left off in the Four Fun division in 2010 by capturing wins in the 10-lap heat, 10 lap semifinal and 35-lap feature in his first time behind the wheel of his new Roland’s On the Spot Welding Honda racecar. In the 35-lap main event, Bourque was first across the finish line ahead of Julien Leblanc (#07) of Haute Aboujagane and Josh Simon (#71) of Bouctouche.

In Four Fun division action, three different drivers visited victory lane with Scott Hall (#98) of Sackville, N.B. recording his first career win in the 10-lap heat, while veteran Phil Coombes (#15) of Shediac Cape picked up the very close win in the 35-lap feature and Wilfred Simon (#10) of Bouctouche came home first in the 10-lap semifinal. Two Halifax area brothers, Kirk Mulvane (#4) of Bedford, N.S. and Kyle MacMillan (#5) of Hammonds Plains, N.S. settled respectively for second and third behind Coombes in the main event.

In Shediac Sportsman division action, defending points champion Don Marcoux (#27) of St.-Louis-de-Kent recorded two wins in the 10-lap semifinal and the 35-lap feature while Tyler Rossiter (#14) of Weldon was victorious in the 10-lap heat. In the 35 lap main event, Marcoux came home victorious ahead of Jamie Vassallo (#38) of Sydney, N.S. and Rossiter.

Racing resumes next Sunday June 12 at 2:00 p.m. with the first visit of the season from the Atlantic Open Wheel (AOW) Modified touring series along as well as championship points racing in Shediac Sportsman, Mini Stock and Four Fun divisions.

This Sundays Community Day is for all Families living in postal codes E4H and E1J thru E1X.

Speedway Transformed for Season Opener

June 2, 2011 - The CENTRE for speed will kick off its 16th season with significant changes to the 128 acres facility.  Most notable among them will be the new longer and tighter racing surface, new drainage system, a 1/16 mile oval for more entry level racing, a paved entry road to eliminate dust, an improved garage area for the teams, a newly renovated grandstand, and a releveled and reseeded infield.

This weekend will see the first of three Maritime Super Series races for Sportsman, a 100 lap event with a strong field of top competitors registered from through Nova Scotia and New Brunswick plus Shediac Sportsman, Mini Stocks, and Four Funs.

This weekends Free "Community Day" is for all families from Nova Scotia.  i.e. Families (Mom, Dad and up to 4 kids) from NS will receive free general admission.

Note:  There will be no access to the pit area form the grandstand, until the end of the event.

DR Scrap Demo and Enduro Rescheduled
Work on New Speedway Continues

May 11, 2011 - Due to weather related concerns and the current 14 day forecast, CFS is announcing it will reschedule the D.R. Scrap Metals Demo and Enduro to be run at a date in the future TBA.  "We've been undergoing major renovations at the speedway" said Tim Wile of the CENTRE. "The weather however has been causing delays with some of the work and with the current 14 day forecast showing some mostly rain each day between now and the 22nd of May we're going to give everybody ample notice that we'll be postponing.  When we open we want everyone to see the new facility completed, not just a work in progress" Wile concluded.  CFS is undergoing major renovations and will work toward opening the new facility to the public on June 5th with the stock car season opener, Maritime Super Series Race 1.

County Days Renamed to Community Days

May 8, 2011 - CFS is pleased to clarify it's free "County Days" and remane them to "Community Days".  Community Days define by Postal Code the communities that receive free entry on that event date throughout the summer.  Individuals in those communities (as verified by a valid Drivers License) are welcomed to attend with their entire immediate family (Mom, Dad, and up to four children) free of charge for that event. Fans should review the Event Schedule for more details.

Four Fun Champ Moving Up - Second Truck Registers

May 6, 2011 - CFS's 2010 Four Fun Champion, Scott Bourque, has informed the speedway that he will be moving up for the 2011 campaign, and not in the traditional fashion!  "Typically we see a driver move up to the next division or maybe one above but Scott has choosen to go one better" said promoter and owner Tim Wile.  "Scott's taking the challenge of moving up to a new level and has registered two vehicles in two seperate classes!  One, a Mini Stock and the second one for the Street Sportsman Division!  That makes the speedways second truck entry to race in the Street Sportsman adding to the growing ranks of the entry level Sportsman class at the speedway.  I'm proud of all these guys, past and present, who are challenging and building on their driving and set-up skills by moving up, said Wile, it's great to see them growing with the sport."

First Truck Registers - Mini Champ Moves Up

April 18, 2011 - CFS is pleased and excited to announce that the first Truck competitor has registered for the 2011 campaign at the CENTRE.  The competitor from Nova Scotia is looking forward to competing against the rest of the Shediac Sportsman class with his 1/4 ton entry.  In other exciting Shediac Sportsman news, multi Mini Stock champ, Martin Landry, of Barachois also announced he has acquired a new ride for the class.  Landry, who made the Mini Stock class look easy for the past several years decided to challenge his existing skills and build on his considerable driving abiliity by taking the step up into the Shediac Sportsman. Landry will add additional excitement in the "crash and bang, sideways swerving, keep you on the edge of your seat" class that is the Shediac Sportsman.   Landry makes the fifth new competitor to register for the class for the 2011 campaign.  "It's going to be an exciting year of racing based on the new registrations so far", said promoter Tim Wile.  "This class always puts on a great show and with the numbers now looking like a minimum of 12 - 15 cars each week we're excited for the fans and competitors.  These guys are going to be fun to watch!"

The first event for Shediac Sprtsman is on June 5th.

CFS to Add Super Sportsman Dates

March 24, 2011 - CENTRE for Speed is pleased to announce that as a result of driver interest there will be 4 additional sportsman dates added to the 2011 schedule.  The additional races are a result of responses from 18 teams to the speedways Super Sportsman questionaire on the subject of points championship racing.  Fourteen of the teams indicated that they would prefer, on average, 4 more sportsman races.  These are in addition to the CENTRES currently scheduled longer distance races (including the Atlantic Championships and 3 Maritime Super Series events). The average preferred length of the race was 40 laps with the majority of teams preferring the points fund to be included in the purse each week for those who are consistently regular competitors in the races.  The speedway says it will therefore try to accomodate the drivers requests with 4 more 40 lap events and will add the points fund to the purse for regulars at the 2nd through 4th events.   The speedway expects to release its schedule during the first weeks of April.

Altantic Championships Updates

Oct 1, 2010 -  As of Friday afternoon (3:30 p.m), all scheduled racing events on Saturday and Sunday as part of the Atlantic Stock Car Championships at the Centre for Speed (CFS) in Grand Barachois, N.B. are a GO!.

The current weather forecast indicates that if it does rain or sprinkle in the Shediac / Grand Barachois area, it should not last past 10 a.m. on Saturday morning  Therefore, the worst case scenario is that Saturday's drivers practices would start at 10a.m. and by noon or early afternoon, thanks to the warmer than normal weather, CFS will be running the planned event on Saturday!

Please note that tonight's (Friday) drivers practice may be rained out.  At present, it is difficult to accurately pinpoint the weather as the forecast is calling for "isolated showers" which could mean we get some rain at CFS or none at all. Right now, the practice session is a GO, but it might have to be cancelled and details to that effect will be available from the CFS info line at (506) 532-3032.

Registrations continue to be received in several classes for Championships Speed Weekend, tomorrow and Sunday.  Nearly 170 cars are now scheduled to converge on Shediac in what promises to be a not to be missed event.

Competitors Battle to Exciting Finish in Point Finals

Sunday, Aug 29, 2010 - It was a day to remember at the CENTRE for Speed.  The 15 Anniversary of  points championships racing would decide the champions in each division for the season and fans were treated to some exciting racing, the thrill of victory and the pain of defeat.

In the Super Sportsman Divisions Craig Ward, a realtive newcomer to the CENTRE had lead most of the season but long time CFS veteran Luc Bourgeois had wittled away at Wards lead bringing it to just a one point margin heading into the final event.  Ward would start ahead of Bourgeois in the first heat as dictated by the scoring algorithm for weekly events but anything can happen in Stock Car racing and before the first lap was completed on  the first heat in the class Craig Ward found himself in a deficit position that he would battle all day to try to overcome.  On the first lap of the first race in his division Ward made contact with the 50 of Jim Duke sending him into a spin and forcing Ward, of Riverview, to take up position at the back of the pack.  Ward gained back several positions in the heat and then made another gain in the semi and feature but at the end of the day would end up 2 points shy of Bourgeois who raced flawlessly throughout the event and was crowned the winner of the Championship after finishing second to Ronnie Lane, of River Glade, who was once again unstoppable in his charge to the front.  Bourgeois, from Memramcook, was second on the day and class Rookie of the Year - Matt Rodgers of Smithtown was 3rd.  Bert Cormier (#3) of Bouctouche was 3rd in the points in the Super Sportsman Division racing the final 3 events with nothing more than a Street Stock motor.

In Sportsman action several competitors were within 5 points of leader Don Marcoux going into the final event.  Marcoux kept a steady hand throughout the event and his equipment worked flawlessly while heating and mechanical problems plagued both Tim Layton and Tyler Rossiter, both of Hillsbourough,  leaving only Dougie MacEwen of Charlottetown with a chance to overtake Marcoux.   Despite MacEwens top 3 finishes in each of the heat and semi including a win in the feature Marcoux simply raced to strong for MacEwen to gain enough ground to overcome the start of the days 5 point deficit and ended second in the points followed by Rossiter.     MacEwen won the Feature while Rossiter won the semi and Marcoux won the heat.

In the Minis Martin Landry of Grand Barachois "ran away" with the championship despit close competition from Mike Edwards of Sussex after arriving at the speedway later in the season.  On the day, Edwards won the heat and the feature while Denis P LeBlanc of Bouctouche picked up his first win of the year in the semi.  Landry "minded his knitting" and took first in the points followed by Edwards and Julien LeBlanc of Haute Aboujagane.  Landry finsihed second in the feature to Edwards and Julien LeBlanc was third.

Finally in the Four Fun Division Scott Bourque  #69 of Cap Pele took home the championship followed by Phil Coombs #15 of Shediac Bridge and Serge Robichaud and his #63 of Saint Charles.  Meanwhile Gerald Brun returned to the speedway in Eldon Campbells #17 to win the feature followed by the #7 of Justin MacDonald of Springhill and the 15 of Coombes.   Robichaud won the heat and class Rookie of the year Adam Rodgers of Smithtown won the semi.

CFS Celebrates return to Saturday Night Racing with "$20 Car Load Night"

CFS abandoned it's traditional July / August Saturday Night race program at the end of it's 2008 season as a part of its partnership agreement with River Glade Speedway.

Monster Trucks and Demo to be Rescheduled

July 11, 2010 -  CFS is sorry to inform fans that the Monster Truck show and Demo scheduled for today is cancelled and will be rescheduled to a date in the near future, TBA.  Early this morning we were informed that three of the six trucks had mechanical issues and would not be able to compete today after running a show in Maine last night.  A decision was therefore made to attempt to reschedule the show for later in the summer rather than have only three trucks.  CFS hopes to make an announcement as to the agreement on a new date later next week.  CFS wishes to apologize for any inconvenience to its fans.  The speedway asks that fans wait to see the reschedule date before deciding on a refund however anyone who wishes an immediate refund may claim one at the location where they purchased their tickets.

CENTRE to Require Crates for 2012

June 6, 2012 - CENTRE for Speed announced at its May 30th drivers meeting that it will require crate engines in all Sportsman and Super Sportsman cars competing at the speedway by no later than 2012.  CFS owner, Tim Wile says that the program is beginning announced now to allow competitors time to use  up their existing refreshed inventory of customer built engines and plan for the acquisition of the spec speedway supplied crate engines for 2012.  "Costs for custom build engines in these two classes are escalating and in the case of the Super Sportsman class we consider them to be high in comparison to other available options.  Crate engines in these two classes should reduce the costs to compete significantly while improving the level of competition for our fans and drivers and making it affordable to build new cars again." said Wile.  The sealed spec crate engines are roughly equal to the cost of a refresh of most custom engines.  Sportman and Super Sportsman competitors will be required to run the speedway speced engine available for purchase through the speedway  as of this announcement.

This program is similar in nature to the crate engine program within the speedways new ACT Late Model division.
The speedway says it will continue to look for ways to reduce costs and will make additional changes throughout the season that it feels are necessary to allow new cars to be built in the Sportsman and Super Sportsman fields for weekly competition. in 2011 and beyond.

Speedway Announces Free Admission for Children

May 25, 2010 - CFS is pleased to announce that all children age 15 and younger who are in attendance at this Sunday's POGO "Full Contact 50" race day will be admitted free of charge. Enjoy the races!

Free Admission for Drivers Expanded

May 25, 2010 - Today, CFS is announcing that it is expanding and extending its free admission for drivers to this weekend for both Stock Car and Demolition / Full Contact (aka "Thrasher") competitors.  The CENTRE says it will extend its offer of  season long free admission to both Stock Car and Thrasher (Demo) competitors who compete this coming weekend in the POGO Full Contact 50 and Points Championship Racing event.  "All additional drivers who were not able to make last weeks event but show up to compete in this weekends event on Sunday, May 30th will receive free admission" said owner, Tim Wile.  "We feel that under the varying circumstances, and to be fair, we should extend the offer for our stock car competitors who were unable to be ready for last weekend. We also would like to make the same offer to our Demolition or "Thrasher" competitors".

Drivers may still only miss up to 2 events (total) throughout the season and will receive free entry all season long to all points racing events as long as they miss no more than 2 events (total) for their division during the season.  The speedway wishes to thank all those who were in attendance last weekend and advise that they are not affected by this announcement in anyway.  Drivers are encouraged to call the speedway if they have any questions.

CENTRE for Speed Intorduces ACT Late Models

April 9, 2010 – The Center for Speed (CFS) in Shediac, New Brunswick announced today that the 2011 season will offer some changes in the type of race divisions that will be offered to Maritime stock car racing teams. The introduction of the American Canadian Tour (ACT) Late Model division as a premiere weekly division has generated enthusiasm among many of the top tier CENTRE racers.

“The time is right for our race facility and race teams to join forces with what has become the most successful form of weekly and touring racing in the Northeastern United States and in the provinces of Quebec and Ontario. We are happy and excited to be the first organization in the Maritimes to introduce this very successful type of Late Model racing to our region,” said Tim Wile, the General Manager of the CENTRE of Speed.

The ACT program has expanded over the past decade to include a dozen weekly tracks and two major touring divisions throughout New England, Quebec, and Ontario. ACT Late Model programs are supported at Oxford Plains Speedway in Maine, home of the famous “Oxford 250”; New Hampshire tracks: White Mountain, Twin State, Lee USA, Canaan Speedway; Seekonk Speedway in Massachusetts, and Waterford Speedbowl in Connecticut. Thunder Road Speedbowl in Vermont is the home of the ACT Late Model division, and Capital City in Ottawa, along with Kawartha Speedway in Ontario also are affiliate tracks of the ACT program. The American Canadian Tour in the United States and the ACT Castrol Series in Quebec and Ontario are two of the most successful traveling tours in the Northeast.

Tom Curley, President of ACT said, “We designed the ACT Late Model division with a high priority on weekly racing as a base to our business model. The ACT Late Model philosophy was, and continues to provide a cost-efficient car for race teams, race tracks, as well as promoters and fans. We now have over 400 teams who use the ACT rules and we continue to enjoy expansion. The racing with the crate motors, Goodyear tires, restricted drive train and sealed Koni shocks has definitely controlled the costs for the racers. The end result is that we have a ‘driver’ division with great parity. It is not a high-level division where whoever can afford to spend the most money usually dominates. We are eager to work with the CENTRE for Speed on this expansion project.”

The move by the CFS to an ACT Late Model division opens up many new opportunities for racers and their fans from the New Brunswick region. The ‘universal’ rules throughout the Northeast will once again encourage Maritime race teams to compete at races like the “Oxford 250”, major ACT Castrol Series races throughout Quebec, and as a part of the ACT affiliate track program Maritime teams will have an opportunity to compete at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway in Loudon, NH during the NASCAR ‘Chase” weekend each September.

CFS will be holding an informational meeting at a place and time TBA in the near future.
The CENTRE for Speed's season opens on Saturday, May 15th at 1PM with the Atlantic Demo and Endurance Championships and the Stock Car Season Opener the following Sunday on May 23rd at 1PM.
