CFS Crowns Champions in Biggest Awards Night

Dec, 15, 2007 - CENTRE for Speed showered it's regular and series competitors with awards tonight in recognition of their accomplishments in the 2007 season.  It was the richest awards night ever held for CFS competitors with over $50,000 in cash and sponsor prizes handed out to the speedways loyal racers.   "This is by far our best awards package ever and, based on early response to sponsor proposals we expect 2008 to be even better.  We were able to increase our gate and have our mortgage discharged this last season so there was a little extra money to go around.  It's proof that when we all work together we all win and here at the CENTRE that means sharing our good fortune with our competitors" said Tim Wile, General Manager.

"The awards get better each year" said one Street Stock regular competitor at the speedway.  "I had a lot of fun racing all year and had money left over at the end of the season.  These awards are like  like icing on a cake!  The spedway has made racing affordable and fun, again."

Hictoric Little Guys 100 Champs Crowned

GRAND BARACHOIS, NEW BRUNSWICK – The ‘Little Guys 100 Invitational’ 4-cylinder feature held back on Sept 3rd had something for everyone -  a drag race, a photo finish, disqualifications for two of the 35 competitors, and four division champions were crowned!
In the first ever "Little Guys 100" Gaetan Boudreau (#71) of Shediac and Gérald Brun (#33) of Moncton ran side-by-side for the final five laps of the ‘Little Guys 100 lap’ Invitational with Boudreau holding on for the apparent win by mere centimeters ahead of Brun after having led the event for a total of 95 laps. However, in he tech shed after ther race, both Boudreau and Brun were disqualified for having tires that were above the specifications allowed handing the race victory to Michel Brun (#77) of Grand Barachois who had crossed the finish line in third position but was vaulted into first following the disqualification.  Pierre Gautreau (#99) of Shediac was awarded second place winnings while Marcel Goguen (#56) of Grande-Digue took third.

Boudreau, who was nonetheless crowned as the new TigerCat division champion for 2007 at CFS, started the longest race ever presented in Atlantic Canada for 4-cylinder racecars in third position, but quickly challenged pole-sitter Pierre Gautreau (#99) of Shediac for the lead. On lap #3, Boudreau took advantage of a small opening on the inside to move ahead of Gautreau.

Gary Stewart (#43) of Emerald, PEI was running a strong third when his afternoon came to an abrupt end on lap #63 as plumes of smoke billowed from his engine compartment. Then on lap #71, a dramatic turn of events brought out a halt to the action as both Jacques Leblanc (#31) of Shediac and Denis Leblanc (#99) of Bouctouche flipped their racecars on the outside of turn #4. Both drivers were unhurt and after a little help to put their cars back on four wheels, they continued the race.

During a caution on lap #71, Brun ducked into the pit area for gas and a few new tires thereby having to restart the race at the back end of the lead lap. He then put on a driving clinic for the next 13 laps as he weaved his way through, under and around lap traffic to finally vault into second position on lap #84 to set up the dramatic side-by side photo finish.

Boudreau had earlier claimed the win in the second 10-lap heat while Pierre Gautreau (#99) was first across the stripe in the first heat.

In Sportsman action, Dan Bourque (#15) of Grande Digue saw his chances of catching Luc Bourgeois (#88) of Memramcook for the season points championship come to an abrupt and frustrating end with five laps remaining in the 25-lap feature as his brake rotor gave way coming out of turn #4. Bourgeois, a former Streetstock champ at CFS, then cruised to a second place finish to claim his first Sportsman division title ahead of Bourque. The championship chase overshadowed a great run by Bert Cormier (#3) of Bouctouche who captured his first feature of the season finishing ahead of Bourgeois and Marcel Maillet (#25) of St. Antoine in the 25-lap main event. Maillet had earlier captured the win in the semi-final while Claude Gaudet (#22) of Barachois took home top honours in the 10-lap heat.

In Streetstock action, veteran Gérard Doiron (#15) of Haute-Aboujagane recorded his second consecutive grand slam and his third feature win in a row aboard his Berkshire Vacation Village Monte Carlo. Meanwhile, Rémi Gaudet (#35) of Grand Barachois claimed his second consecutive Streetstock division championship as a result of his fourth place showing in the 25-lap feature as well as his third place showings in the 10-lap heat and semi-final. Mark Sherwood (#44) of Dieppe took second spot in the feature followed by Norm Richard (#38) of Grand Barachois, who also enjoyed a good afternoon with second place showings in the heat and semi-final.

It was a disappointing but rewarding afternoon for Chris Powers (#26) of Memramcook who captured his first Thundercat division points championship while sitting in the pit grand stands after his Coast Tire Dieppe Cavalier developed some terminal mechanical problems in the first 4-cylinder heat.

Duke records first feature win in six years!
Doiron hits a grand slam in Street Stocks

SHEDIAC, NEW BRUNSWICK – In only his third week back behind the wheel of a Sportsman racecar, former CFS track champion Jim Duke (#84) of Lakeville put it all together to capture the 25-lap main event during Auto Seller points championship action on Saturday evening at the Centre for Speed (CFS) in Barachois, New Brunswick.

Duke, who last competed regularly in the Sportsman division in 2001, was full marks for the win aboard his Dunnett Brothers Plumbing and Heating Chevrolet in the exciting and tightly contested feature, which included a few lead changes and lots of fender-scrapping action. Pole-sitter Bert Cormier (#3) of Bouctouche set the early pace while fending off outside challenges from a number of drivers. The outcome of the event came down to the last 10 laps when Duke finally took the lead with a well timed inside pass on Nathan Ellis (#95) of Janeville.

Duke managed to maintain his slim lead over the final laps to capture the win edging Ellis by a few centimeters at the finish line. Meanwhile, Dan Bourque (#15) of Grande Digue, who started the event second in the overall points standings, edged out current points leader Luc Bourgeois (#88) of Memramcook for third spot. Bourque had earlier captured the win in the 10-lap semi-final ahead of Duke and Ellis while Claude Gaudet (#22) of Grand Barachois enjoyed early success by capturing the 10-lap heat.

In Streetstock action, veteran Gérard Doiron (#15) of Haute-Aboujagane continued his late season surge by recording a grand slam and his second feature win in a row aboard his Berkshire Vacation Village Monte Carlo. Doiron crossed the finish line with Norm Richard (#38) of Grand Barachois parked on his back bumper as he had been for most of the 25-lap feature. Richard simply could not find any opening over the final half of the event to get around Doiron who held his line for the win. Meanwhile, points-leader Rémi Gaudet (#75) of Grand Barachois consolidated his lead atop the standings by methodically making his way through the field while dealing with handling problems to cross the finish line in third spot in all three races.

In TigerCat action, Marcel Goguen (#56) of Grande Digue piloted his SMJ Roofing Honda to his first feature win in 2007 to go along with an earlier win in the 10-lap semi-final in the very competitive field. Gary Stewart (#43) of Emerald, PEI was second across the stripe in the feature followed by Daniel Gautreau (#20) of Shediac. Gautreau took home the first place hardware in the 10-lap heat.

In Thundercat action, points-leader Chris Powers (#26) of Moncton celebrated his first wedding anniversary by outdistancing 15 other competitors to capture his third feature win of the season. Powers put his Coast Tire Dieppe Cavalier in the lead for good just past the halfway point of the 25-lap feature and edged out rookie Serge Robichaud (#63) of St-Charles de Kent and Phil Coombes (#15) of Shediac Cape at the finish line. Robichaud had earlier captured the win in the 10-lap semi while Coombes was first across the stripe in the 10-lap heat.

Next weekend, the CFS will crown its new season champions with two jammed-packed events.
On Saturday, September 1st at 7:00 p.m. the speedway will host its third Day of Destruction and Tuner Fest drag racing and burnout event which will include a Demolition Derby as well as three special races for the Demolition competitors including a full-contact race, a ‘barrel race’ and a ‘soap box’ derby. Meanwhile, all street legal drivers are invited to bring their fast rides to compete in the straightaway drag races and burnout competition that will also be part of the event.

On Labour Day Monday, September 3rd at 3:00 p.m., the CFS will host its first ‘Little Guys 100 Invitational’ which will be the longest 4-cylinder feature event ever presented in Atlantic Canada and which is open to all 4-cylinder competitors. The Monday event will also be the final points championship races of the season for regular CFS competitors in the Sportsman, Streetstock, TigerCat and Thundercat divisions as well as racing in the ‘League of Outlaws’ winged go-karts.

Landry, Sherwood and Marcoux capture first career feature wins at CENTRE for Speed

SHEDIAC, NEW BRUNSWICK –  It definitely was a night of firsts on Saturday evening during Lays / Doritos points championship stock car racing at the Centre for Speed (CFS) as three drivers claimed their first career feature wins in three of the four classes of racing action.

Sixteen-year-old Martin Landry (#00) of Grand Barachois will no doubt remember the evening of August 11th as one of his finest days at the wheel of his Roland’s On The Spot Welding Honda as he picked up not only his first career feature win but his first career grand slam in the highly-competitive TigerCat division. Landry was able to avoid a few early crashes in the 25-lap main event and then battled current points-leader Gaetan Boudreau (#71) of Shediac for most of the event until lady-luck dropped in on Landry as he was running a strong second to Boudreau on lap #19. Going into turn #3, Boudreau blew his right-front tire and was forced to head to the pit area and giving up the lead to Landry who then sailed to victory lane ahead of Pierre Gautreau (#99) of Shediac and Marcel Goguen (#56) of Grande Digue.

In Streetstock action, Mark Sherwood (#43) of Dieppe finally tasted victory in the main event in his second season behind the wheel of his Tri-City Decorators Chevrolet. The twenty-one year old Sherwood, who had picked up the first place hardware in the 10-lap semi, almost saw his historic win evaporate with four laps remaining in the 25-lap feature after having been spun out on the backstretch and finding himself sailing through the infield area. However, officials determined that points-leader Rémi Gaudet (#75) of Grand Barachois was the culprit as he had been tailing Sherwood for the past five laps and had clipped the back end of Sherwood’s racecar to bring out the yellow flag. As a result, Sherwood reclaimed his first position while Gaudet had to go to the back of the field for the restart. Sherwood then calmly held off a last ditch challenge on the outside from Gérard Doiron (#15) of Haute Aboujagane to claim his first career feature win. Doiron, who was first across the stripe in the heat, crossed the line in second followed by Mark Ferguson (#41) of Saint John.

Not to be outdone, Don Marcoux (#91) of St. Louis de Kent took an early lead in his A&P Garbage-sponsored Dodge Neon in the 25-lap Thundercat feature and on this night, he would not be denied as he held off a few late challenges to capture his first career feature win. Marcoux was all smiles in the winners circle after second and third place finishes over the past few weeks finally paid off with a much anticipated win in the main event ahead of the two front runners in the points standings, Josh Simon (#71) of Bouctouche and Chris Powers (#26) of Moncton. Simon had earlier captured the win in the 10-lap heat while Powers was first across the stripe in the semi-final.

In the Sportsman division, points leader Luc Bourgeois (#88) of Memramcook claimed his fourth feature win of the season to go along with a win in the semi-final aboard his Gautreau’s Used Auto Parts Ford while brothers Dan and Jim Duke took second and third place honours. Dan Duke of Lakeville, who took over the driving duties for the evening for Dan Bourque in the NAPA AutoParts Monte Carlo (#15) as a result of a back injury to Bourque, had earlier picked up a third place finish in the semi-final before outdistancing his brother in the main event. Jim Duke (#84), a former CFS track champion who now races out of Miramichi, was nonetheless quite pleased with his third place showing. It was Jim’s first night back behind the wheel of a Sportsman racecar after a number of years working behind the scenes with the Atlantic Open Wheel (AOW) tour. Claude Gaudet (#22) of Barachois had earlier claimed the win in the heat but took an early exit from the feature with transmission problems.

Next Saturday, August 18 at 7:00 p.m., the CFS will host the Race-In Convenience 100, the seventh race in the Maritime Sportsman Super Series as part of the annual PEI Invitational 250  which will also include a 50-lap feature for Streetstocks as well as twin 50-lap features for TigerCat and Thundercat division racecars. A number of competitors from PEI are expected in the three support classes while top-Sportsman drivers such as Wayne Wormell of Miramichi and Gary Hicks of Moncton are expected to compete in the Maritime Sportsman Super Series event. There will also be racing in the always-popular ‘League of Outlaws’ winged go-karts.

Gary Hicks captures exciting Lounsbury Chevrolet 100
at Centre for Speed

SHEDIAC, NEW BRUNSWICK – Moncton’s Gary Hicks (#13) drove his GM Goodwrench / Rogers Digital Cable Chevrolet to victory lane in the Lounsbury’s Chevrolet 100 during the Maple Leaf NB Day Weekend, the sixth event in the Maritime Super Sportsman Series Sunday evening at the Centre for Speed (CFS).

Two 10-lap heats set the stage for the 100-lap feature with series points leader Wayne Wormell (#23) of Miramichi and Luc Bourgeois (#88) of Memramcook both capturing victories to ensure their front-row starting position. However, Bourgeois accepted the pole challenge, which meant he would start at the back of the field, and a coin toss inverted the starting position sending Wormell to the back for the start of the Lounsbury’s Chevrolet 100.

Hicks dominated the first 50-lap portion of the event after taking the lead from pole-sitter Cal Hatfield (#11) of Rothesay on the 5th lap to lead the 15-car field to the finish line ahead of Wormell and Dan Bourque (#15) of Grande Digue. Wormell, who started the event at the tail end of the field, had already made his way through the field and by lap 10 was battling for third position.

For the start of the second 50-lap portion of the event, Hicks, Wormell and Bourgeois once again started from the back of the field. Methodically, the three top drivers in the series made their way through the field, but could not catch pole-sitter Claude Gaudet (#22) of Barachois who held a commanding lead until a mistake on lap 32 cost him the lead. With the track temperature dropping in the evening, Gaudet simply lost control of his M&M Seafood Chevy in turn #1 bringing out one of the rare caution flags in this event.

This set up an exciting restart with only 14 laps remaining with Bourgeois on the inside front-row and Wormell on the outside. Bourgeois drove his Gautreau’s Auto Parts Ford into the lead on the restart while Wormell who was battling a small oil leak, had difficulty sticking on the outside allowing Hicks to move into second on the inside groove. At the finish line, it was Bourgeois followed by Hicks and Wormell while Gaudet made a strong comeback to finish in fifth spot.

Hicks was handed the first place trophy as the overall winner thanks to his first place finish in the first 50-lap segment coupled with his second place finish in the second portion. Bourgeois captured second overall with Wormell continuing to hold onto to his series points lead as a result of his third overall finish.

Meanwhile, it was a night of first time winners in Streetstock, TigerCat and Thundercat invitational action. Veteran streetstock driver Rick Cashol (#54) of Saint John captured the win in the 50-lap feature. Cashol, who started the event on the outside front-row, battled sophomore Mark Sherwood (#44) of Dieppe for the lead with some side-by-side action over the first 5 laps of the event. Eventually, Cashol overtook Sherwood and never looked back driving to the winner’s circle followed by Sherwood and Shelley Stewart (#43) of Emerald, PEI. Sherwood had earlier won the 10-lap heat.
Mike MacDougall (#23x) of Riverview enjoyed a perfect first night of racing at CFS capturing the 35-lap Thundercat feature to go along with his first place finish in the heat. Rookie Serge Robichaud (#63) of St. Charles made it very interesting over the final portion of the feature event, but had to settle for second at the finish line followed by Chris Powers (#26) of Moncton, who had earlier finished second to MacDougall in the heat.

In TigerCat action, Pierre Gautreau (#99) of Shediac finally captured his first feature win of the season in the 35-lap invitational feature ahead of Gary Stewart (#43) of Emerald, PEI and Marcel Goguen (#56) of Grande Digue. Nonetheless, Goguen went home happy as he picked up his first win of the season in the 10-lap heat.

Next Saturday, August 11 at 7:00 p.m., the CFS will host Lays / Doritos points racing in Sportsman, Streetstock, TigerCat and Thundercat divisions as well as racing in the ever-popular ‘League of Outlaws’ winged go-karts.

‘Faster Pastor’ proves to be a "Nunn" while
Bourgeois wins Sportsman main event

SHEDIAC, NEW BRUNSWICK – A large crowd of parishioners from various congregations from throughout southeastern New Brunswick was on hand Saturday evening at the Centre for Speed (CFS) to cheer on their respective pastor in the ‘Faster Pastor’ annual fundraising stock car racing event.

Pastor Harry Nunn of Lakeville’s Pathway Church of God got ‘a little help from up above’ to lead flag-to-flag in capturing the 15 lap feature in the 10-pastor field of competitors. Pastor Lloyd O’Blenes of Wheaton Settlement Baptist Church, who took first place honours in the 10-lap heat, came from the back of the field to challenge nunn for first for the last half dozen laps but couldn't get by and was second across the finish line in the feature followed by Pastor Pat Steeves of Gorge Road Christ’s Church.   The semi-final win went to Pastor Dave Holmes of the Killiam Mills Full Gospel Assembly. Part of the proceeds from the evening’s racing event went to support the the participating churchs various mission and community projects.
Close quarters racing was the order of the evening in all four regular racing classes as Sportsman point leader Luc Bourgeois (#88) of Memramcook picked up his fourth feature win of the season thanks to some smart driving and lots of patience at the helm of his Gautreau’s Auto Parts Ford. Bourgeois chased down pole-sitter Marcel Maillet (#25) of St. Antoine in the 25-lap main event and by the midway point, was parked on Maillet’s back bumper patiently looking for the right opportunity to make his move. On lap #19, Maillet lost a little traction going into turn #2 opening the door for Bourgeois to stick his front bumper inside and eventually take the lead by the end of the backstretch. Maillet ended up crossing the finish line in third position while Moncton’s Gary Hicks claimed second. Maillet had earlier claimed wins in both the 10-lap heat and semi-final.

Meanwhile, Rémi Gaudet (#75) of Grand Barachois continued his strong season capturing his sixth Streetstock feature aboard his Pine Needles Golf Chevrolet to go along with two-second place finishes in the heat and semi. Norm Richard (#38) of Grand Barachois, who’s crew completely rebuilt the front end of the racecar over the past few weeks after he slammed hard into the wall a few weeks ago, also enjoyed a strong showing with a win in the heat to go along with second in the 25-lap feature and third in the semi-final. Mark Sherwood (#44) of Dieppe crossed the line third in the feature after earlier claiming the win in the semi-final.

In Thundercat action, Josh Simon (#71) of Bouctouche was victorious in the ‘second across the line’ 20-lap feature ahead of Chris Powers (#26) of Moncton and Don Marcoux (#91) of St.-Louis-de-Kent. This once-a-season event calls on the drivers to race hard towards the front until the last few laps when strategy and track positioning come into play as the winner is the second car to cross the finish line. Simon, who also won last year’s event, used his experience to full advantage during the final stretch-allowing rookie Marcoux to cross the finish line just ahead of his racecar. Powers had earlier taken the wins in both the heat and semi-final.

The TigerCat competitors once again put on a tremendous show of close racing with Daniel Gautreau (#20) of Shediac taking top honours in the 20-lap feature and 10-lap heat. Brother Pierre Gautreau (#99) also of Shediac was second across the stripe in the feature. Meanwhile, Gaetan Boudreau (#71) of Shediac had to settle for two-second place finishes in the heat and semi to go along with his third place showing in the feature while Gérald Brun (#33) of Irishtown captured the win in the semi-final.

Next weekend, the CFS will host two motorsport events during its New Brunswick Day 200 Invitational Weekend. On Saturday, August 4th at 7:00 p.m., the CFS will host the sixth race in the Maritime Super Series for Sportsman with the Lounsbury’s Chevrolet 100,  a 50-lap feature for Streetstocks, a 35-lap ‘invitational’ feature for 4 cylinder racecars as well as the ‘League of Outlaws’ winged go-kart races.

On Monday, August 6th at 4:00 p.m., the CFS will host its third Day of Destruction and Tuner Fest drag racing event featuring street legal drag races as well as ‘full contact’ and ‘soap box derby’ races for the demolition cars, capped off by a giant Demolition Derby with $2,000 in prize money available to the top 3 contenders.

Hicks captures ‘Moosehead 100’ Maritime Super Series Sportsman event

at Centre for Speed

SHEDIAC, NEW BRUNSWICK – Gary Hicks (#13) of Moncton, the defending champ in the Maritime Sportsman Super Series, enjoyed his best outing of the season on his way to capturing the Moosehead 100, the 5th leg in the Maritime Super Series on Saturday evening at the Centre for Speed (CFS).

“A lot of the credit goes to my pit crew who kept working over the past number of weeks and throughout today’s event to finally find the perfect set-up,” said Hicks in the winner’s circle. “This was the best car I’ve had all season. It’s been a bit frustrating, but we finally put it all together today and it sure feels good,”

Hicks, who led 97 of the 100 laps during the event aboard his Rogers Digital Cable Monte Carlo, had to fight back a number of challenges from the Maritime Super Series points leader, Wayne Wormell (#23) of Miramichi. Wormell tried every trick in the book to get by the veteran Hicks over the final 25 laps of the event racing bumper to bumper and often side-by-side during the few restarts but to no avail. “I really respect a guy like Wayne who really gave me a strong battle throughout the final portion of the race and kept it clean.”

Luc Bourgeois (#88) of Memramcook, who captured the win in the first 50-lap portion of the event after muscling his way past Hicks in turn #2 with only three laps to go, finished second overall for the event after experiencing mechanical difficulties in the later stages of the 100-lap event and crossing the line in 9th position in the second 50-lap portion.

Wormell, who captured the pole for the event thanks to his heat win and then elected to accept the pole challenge starting at the back of the field for the first 50-lap leg, finished third overall. Marcel Maillet (#25) of St. Antoine and Dan Bourque (#15) of Grande Digue, rounded out the top five overall. Freddy Prosser (#31) of Shenstown captured the win in the first heat but experienced mechanical difficulties in the feature and finished out of the top five.

Meanwhile, Rémi Gaudet (#75) of Grand Barachois continued his strong start to the season by capturing his fifth Streetstock feature aboard his Pine Needles Golf Chevrolet. Gérard Doiron (#15) of Haute Aboujagane, who had earlier recorded wins in the 10-lap heat and semi-final, had to settle for second in the 25-lap feature while Shelley Stewart (#43) of Emerald, PEI had her strongest showing of the season with a third place finish in the main event.

The TigerCat competitors put a tremendous show of close racing action with a number of lead changes in all three races and some very close finishes. In the end, Gaetan Boudreau (#71) of Shediac continued his strong season by capturing his fifth feature win of the season aboard his Lou Door Ventures Honda followed closely by Marcel Goguen (#56) of Grande Digue and Michel Brun (#77) of Grand Barachois in the 25-lap main event. Daniel Gautreau (#20) of Shediac took top honours in the 10-lap semi-final while Brun took the win in the heat.

Close racing was also the order of the day in the Thundercat division with Josh Simon (#71) of Bouctouche capturing the win in the 25-lap feature ahead of Don Marcoux (#91) of St.-Louis-de-Kent and rookie Serge Robichaud (#63) of St. Charles. Simon also took the win in the 10-lap heat while Eldon Campbell (#17) of Moncton was first to cross the finish line in the 10-lap heat.

Next Saturday, July 21st at 7:00 p.m., the CFS will host regular points racing in its Sportsman, Streetstock, TigerCat and Thundercat divisions along with racing in its ‘League of Outlaw’ winged go-kart division.

Father & son Gaudet capture respective features as six drivers record their first wins during ‘double bill’ Saturday at CFS

SHEDIAC, NEW BRUNSWICK – Motorsports enthusiasts sure got their money’s worth on Saturday evening at the Centre for Speed (CFS) with a full evening of stock car racing excitement capped off with drag races and a spectacular burnout competition under the lights.
Claude Gaudet (#22) of Barachois captured his first Sportsman feature win of the 2007 season to go along with his son Rémi’s fourth Streetstock feature victory while Gaetan Boudreau (#71) of Shediac recorded yet another feature victory in the Thundercat division to cap off a perfect evening.
The senior Gaudet took advantage of a small opening on the inside groove mid-way through the 25-lap Sportsman feature aboard his M&M Seafood Grand Prix and then hung on through a few extended cautions to capture his first feature win of the 2007 season ahead of Marcel Maillet (#25) of St. Antoine and Dan Bourque (#15) of Grande Digue.  Bourque had earlier captured his first victory of the season during the 10-lap heat while rookie Marcel Leblanc (#30) of Bouctouche enjoyed his best outing of the season crossing the finish line first in the 10-lap semi-final for his first career Sportsman victory, to go along with a fourth-place showing in the feature. Points-leader Luc Bourgeois (#88) of Memramcook finished the feature in fifth position after dealing with various mechanical and accident-related problems throughout the evening.
Meanwhile, Streetstock points-leader and defending points champion Rémi Gaudet (#75) of Grand Barachois overcame some early mechanical problems during the 10-lap heat to capture his fourth feature win of the season aboard his Pine Needles Golf Chevrolet. Gérard Doiron (#15) of Haute Aboujagane, who recorded his first win of the season during the heat, had to settle for second place finishes in both the semi-final and feature. Sophomore Mark Sherwood (#44) of Dieppe was third across the stripe in the feature.
In TigerCat action, it was a perfect evening for Gaetan Boudreau (#71) of Shediac who captured his fourth feature win of the 2007 season aboard his Lou Door Ventures Honda to go along with wins in the 10-lap heat and semifinal. Marcel Goguen (#56), driving his newly purchased Prelude, took second place in both the feature and 10-lap semifinal as well as placing third in the heat. Last week’s feature winner, Michel Brun (#77) of Grand Barachois, had to settle for a third place showing in the feature.
The night of first victories continued in Thundercat action as rookie Serge Robichaud (#63) of St. Charles captured his first career feature win in the 12-car field. Another rookie in the division, Don Marcoux (#91) of St.-Louis-de-Kent also enjoyed an evening to remember recording his first win in the 10-lap semifinal before settling for third spot in the 25-lap feature. Current points-leader Chris Powers (#26) of Memramcook took home second place in the feature to go along with his third place showing in the heat. Eldon Campbell (#17) of Moncton was victorious in the 10-lap heat before being involved in a collision during the semi-final, which effectively ended his evening.
Following the stock car event, competitors took to the speedway for some spirited drag racing and a spectacular burnout competition. Denis Leblanc of Shediac drove his 1983 Chevrolet Camaro to the winners circle in the double-elimination straightaway drags by taking two runs from Miguel Leblanc of Scoudouc aboard his 1994 Ford Mustang.
Then, a total of eight competitors put their machines through some tire squealing and burning loops on the straightaway filing the night air with thick tire smoke to the delight of the fans that had waited patiently for the burnout competition. After delighting the fans with some tremendous loops in front of the grandstands, Miguel Leblanc continued his burnouts aboard his 1994 Mustang around turns #1 & #2 until his evening came to a crescendo when thick plumes of steam came barreling out of his engine compartment. The fans rewarded Miguel’s efforts by voting him to first place in the burnout competition followed closely behind by Denis Leblanc in his 1983 Camaro and Michel Ouellet of Haute-Aboujagane aboard his 1986 Mercury.

Blue Moon Lights Wild Night as
Wormell Captures Second Maritime Super Series Victory

SHEDIAC, NEW BRUNSWICK – It was a full moon and what insued was a wild and wooly Saturday night of short track racing as Wayne Wormell (#23) of Miramichi captured a hotly contested Maritime Super Series for Sportsman 100 during stock car racing action at the CFS.
Wormell captured the poll for the 100-lap feature aboard his Harry’s Bar & Grill Monte Carlo thanks to his win in the second 10-lap heat, while Luc Bourgeois (#88) of Memramcook got the outside front row as a result of his win in the first heat. However, both Wormell and Bourgeois found themselves starting from the tail end of the 15-car field after Wormell lost a coin toss to decide if the field remained intact or the front row cars would be inverted to back of the 15-car field.
Corey Little (#83) of Rowley therefore started the event on pole after the coin toss and led the first two laps before Yves McCray (#58) of St. Wilfred, N.B. passed him on the outside. In the meantime, both Wormell and Bourgeois were showing why they are the top two competitors in the Maritime Super Series as they were methodically making their way through the field. McCray held on to the lead until lap #11 when he noticed a familiar sight on his right – Wormell’s Monte Carlo who was now battling for the lead. On the next lap, Wormell powered his racecar to the front and never looked back to win the first 50-lap segment of the event ahead of Brian Gillespie (#69) of Nackawic and McCray followed by Marcel Maillet (#25) of St. Antoine and Bourgeois in fifth.
The field was once again inverted for the second 50-lap segment which once again meant that Wormell had to start at the rear of the field. Gary Hicks (#13) of Moncton, the defending series and CFS Sportsman champion, started on pole after quick work by his Hicks Brothers pit crew to fix a broken rotor sustained half way through the first 50-lap segment. After a few lead changes and a number of caution flags due to minor collisions, Wormell was up front challenging for the lead which he once again maintained for most of the later half of the event.
However, on lap 29, Wormell made a rare error going into turn #1 and lost control of his racecar for a split second which was just enough for Nackawic's "Night Train" aka Brian Gillespie to drive under Wormel to capture the lead followed by Gary "Hot Foot" Hicks.   At the finish line, Gillespie had won the second 50 lap segment and Wormel was left to ponder whether he had led enough laps to take the overall win.
When asked what had occurred on lap #79, Wormell simply shrugged his shoulders still scratching his head about exactly what had gone wrong. “I guess I simply took the wrong line into the turn and lost traction on the rear tires. Luckily, I was able to quickly correct and come out with the win.”
Gillespie had to settle for second place overall followed by Yves McCray and Luc Bourgeois.  The night was riddled with mayhem in the form of multiple spins and crashes which could only be explained by the full moon!
Support class racing saw Rémi Gaudet (#75) of Grand Barachois continue his early season domination in the Streetstock division as he drove his Lou Door Ventures Chevrolet to yet another feature win in the 30-lap main event. Once again, Gaudet came from the rear of the field to finally take the lead for good on lap 18. Rick Cashol (#54) of Saint John was second across the line in his first outing at CFS this season while Gérard Doiron (#15) of Haute Aboujagane took home the third place hardware. Norm Richard (#38) of Grand Barachois captured the win ahead of Gaudet in the 10-lap heat before seeing his evening come to an early end in the feature after crashing into the turn #4 wall.
In TigerCat action, Michel Brun (#77) of Grand Barachois powered his Marcel’s Plumbing Honda to victory lane for the second week in a row in the 30-lap feature ahead of the Gautreau racing team out of Shediac with Daniel Gautreau (#20) in second followed by teammate and brother Pierre Gautreau (#99). Meanwhile, Denis Leblanc (#83) of Shediac captured his first checkered flag in the 10-lap heat ahead of Daniel Gautreau (#20) and Martin Landry (#00) of Grand Barachois.
In Thundercat action, Josh Simon (#71) of Bouctouche also made it two-in-a-row with his third feature win of the 2007 season aboard his G&R Auto Service Honda. Marc Collicut (#12) of Summerside, PEI and points-leader Chris Powers (#26) of Memramcook finished second and third respectively in the feature. Meanwhile, rookie Serge Robichaud (#63) of St. Charles picked up the first place trophy in the 10-lap heat ahead of Simon and Powers.
Next Saturday at 7:00 p.m., the CFS will host the Tow-Mater Kids Box Car Races during regular points racing in Sportsman, Streetstock, TigerCat and Thundercat divisions, the second race in the ‘League of Outlaws’ go-kart division, as well as the re-scheduled ‘Tuner Fest’ drag racing events.

Close Points Battle Continues as Speedway
Shrugs of Rain Threat to "Go Racing"

GRAND-BARACHOIS, NEW BRUNSWICK – Michel Brun (#77) of Grand Barachois took it all in as he savoured his first feature win in the TigerCat division during stock car racing action at the Centre for Speed (CFS) here on Sunday afternoon.
Brun had often finished runner-up or in the top five in the weekly TigerCat feature over the past two seasons. However, this time, he would not be denied as he drove his SMJ Roofing / Cooper Tire Honda to an early lead and held off challenges from the defending points champion Gérald Brun (#33) of Moncton and rookie Denis Leblanc (#83) of Shediac in the 13-car, 20-lap main event. The win capped off a great afternoon for Michel Brun who had earlier crossed the finish line first in the 10-lap semi-final while Gérald Brun took the win in the 10-lap heat.

In Sportsman action, Luc Bourgeois (#88) of Memramcook once again had to overcome mechanical problems to capture the 25-lap feature, his second points championship feature win of the season. In the 10-lap heat, Bourgeois simply could not keep his Gautreau’s Used Auto Parts Ford Fusion from spinning out in the turns. When he drove the racecar into the pit area, his crew quickly found a broken rear shock as the cause of the problem. Bourgeois’ team went to work and got him back out for the semi-final where he finished second to Claude Gaudet (#22) of Barachois, who in the process captured his first checkered flag of the season aboard his M&M Seafoods Grand Prix.  The 25-lap feature saw four lead changes and a dramatic turn of events. Marcel Leblanc (#30) of Bouctouche started the event on the pole only to see Dan Bourque (#15) of Grande Digue pass him on the inside a few laps later. Bourque then built a comfortable lead on the rest of the field until he spun unexpectedly on lap 8 and was done for the day because of mechanical problems. On the ensuing restart, Bert Cormier (#3) of Bouctouche inherited the lead until Bourgeois came through the field and muscled his way inside on Cormier to take over the lead for good on lap #14. Cormier had to settle for a second place finish while Gaudet was third across the stripe.

In Thundercat action, Josh Simon (#71) of Bouctouche recorded a grand slam with wins in the 25-lap feature as well as the 10-lap heat and semi-final. With the wins, Simon moves up a few spots from the 8th position in points he held going into Sunday’s action. Points-leader Chris Powers (#26) of Memramcook recorded two second place finishes on the day, one in the feature and the other in the 10-lap heat, while Phil Coombes (#15) was third in both the feature and semi-final.
Next weekend, the CFS will host three big motorsports events over three days.

On Saturday, June 30th at 7:00 p.m., some of the top Sportsman drivers in the region will make their way to the CFS to compete in the fourth leg of the Maritime SPORTSMAN Super Series 100.   Streetstocks will compete in a 50-lap main event and the speedway will also introduce its ‘Winged Outlaw’ Go-Kart series, which is open to young and old over 42 inches in height. Pre-registration for the go-kart series is required.
On Sunday evening at 7:00 p.m., the CFS will host its first of three ‘Tuner Fest’ drag racing events with side-by-side, slalom and timed drag racing on the speedway oval and straightaways. The evening will also feature and audio ‘blast-off’ competition as well as a Miss Bikini contest. This event is open to all street legal cars.

Bourgeois captures Maritime Super Series Sportsman 100, Petitgrew claims TigerCat feature
while father & son Gaudet enjoy a good afternoon

GRAND BARACHOIS, NEW BRUNSWICK – Luc Bourgeois (#88) of Memramcook got a little help from his friends and lady luck to capture the Maritime Super Series - Sportsman 100 at the Centre for Speed (CFS) here on Sunday afternoon. Meanwhile father Claude Gaudet (#22) and his son Rémi Gaudet (#75) in the Street Stock division enjoyed a successful Father’s day outing while Rod Petitgrew (#77) of Amherst finally captured his first TigerCat feature.

“We had our fingers and toes crossed throughout the afternoon that the car would hold together,” said Luc Bourgeois, “and with lots of hard work from my pit crew along with help from lady luck and Norm Richard (#38) in the Streetstock division, it’s great to be standing here with the first place trophy in my hands.”

Bourgeois fought many mechanical and on-track battles on Father’s Day to capture the 100 lap Maritime Sportsman Super Series main event aboard his Gautreau’s Used Auto Parts Ford Fusion outdistancing Claude Gaudet (#22) of Barachois and Calvin Rankin (#45) of Quispamsis. First to go for Bourgeois was a rocker arm during early afternoon practice. That’s when Norm Richard’s crew stepped in and provided him with a spare part. Then, engine header problems set in and Bourgeois’ crew had to go to work to repair the problem. From then on, all they could do was hope that the car and Bourgeois stayed out of trouble for 110 laps of racing. Their luck started to turn when Bourgeois captured the first 10-lap heat ahead of Gaudet and Yves McCray (#58) of Miramichi, while Wayne Wormel (#23) also of Miramichi was first to cross the line in the second heat ahead of Charlie Wilkins (#33) of Keswick and Leonard Boutilier (#45x) of Lantz, N.S.

Those wins meant that Bourgeois and Wormel would start the 100-lap feature on the front row of the 16-car field. However, both Bourgeois and Wormel decided to accept the pole challenge and start at the back of the pack in order to have a chance at collecting some extra cash for every car they could pass during the event. Claude Gaudet (#22) therefore inherited the pole and led from flag to flag in the first 50-lap leg of the event before a competition yellow allowed drivers to go to the pit area for adjustments and a fuel top-up.

With an inverted field to start the second 50-lap leg, Cal Hatfield (#11) of Rothesay led the first few laps before Yves McCray took over. Meanwhile, Bourgeois, Boutilier and Wormel edged their way through the field.  Eventually, Boutilier took over the lead and for the next 15 laps, he and Bourgeois waged an exciting side-by-side battle until suddenly on lap #86 mechanical problems ended Boutilier’s afternoon as he backed out unexpectedly and drove his car into the pits leaving Bourgeois in the lead.  Bourgeois held on the rest of the way to claim the win in the second leg as well as the overall win for the day.

Claude Gaudet (#22) had to settle for second overall while Rankin took home third place followed closely by Wormel, Gary Hicks (#13) of Moncton and Freddy Prosser (#31) of Shenston in the feature race that was slowed by only 5 cautions.

While father Claude enjoyed a very good afternoon in Sportsman action, son Rémi Gaudet (#75) was also having his share of success as he captured the 10-lap heat and raced to a photo finish in the 25-lap feature, a few centimeters behind the winner Norm Richard (#38) of Grand Barachois.  Gaudet had accepted the Promoters Challenge after drawing Poll Position and started from the back to eventually work his way through traffic to challenge Richard.  The two raced side by side and door handle to door handle for the last half of the event with Richards #38 managing to edge out Gaudet at the finish by meer inches in a photo finish.

Richard, who had helped out his fellow Ford competitor Bourgeois earlier in the day, captured one of the closest victories in CFS history aboard his Petro-Canada Ford. Richard, who had settled for second in the heat, led early in the feature only to see the defending points champion in the division catch-up and eventually pull along side for some of the best side-by-side racing of the day. Gérard Doiron (#15) of Haute Aboujagane claimed third in the feature.

In Thundercat action, Serge Robichaud (#63) of St. Charles captured his first career win in the 10-lap heat before almost flipping on his roof during the 50-lap feature after he lost control of his racecar on the front stretch, having his rear passenger-side wheel fly off and coming to rest safe and sound in the infeld grass. After a few weeks of coming in second, Rod Petitgrew (#77) of Amherst finally put it all together for his first feature win of the season outdistancing points-leader Chris Powers (#26) and Gary Stewart (#43) of Emerald, PEI at the finish line in the 15-car, 50 lap main event.

TigerCat action saw Gaetan Boudreau (#71) of Boudreau West capture the win in the 40-lap feature, ahead of last week’s feature winner Daniel Gautreau (#20) of Shediac and rookie Denis Leblanc (#83) of Shediac. Gary Stewart (#43) of PEI was the winner in the 10-lap heat.

The CENTRE's track staff and officials put on theiur own impressive display running the entire event of more than 200 feature laps plus qualifying for all four divisions in less than three and a half hours.

Bourgeois has perfect afternoon in Sportsman racing action
as Gautreau records first win in TigerCat division

GRAND BARACHOIS, NEW BRUNSWICK – Luc Bourgeois (#88) of Memramcook had two things in mind before the start of the Seeley’s Motel points championship stock car racing card at the Centre for Speed (CFS) here on Sunday afternoon. Make up the 5 points that separated him from the points lead in the division and capture his first feature win of the season. On both counts, he can say mission accomplished!

Bourgeois drove his Gautreau’s Used Auto Parts Ford Fusion to victory lane in all three Sportsman races on the program including the 25-lap feature and will now enter next week’s action atop the leader board. In the feature, Bourgeois first took the lead with an inside pass on lap 15, and then came the caution. On the ensuing restart, Calvin Rankin (#45) of Quispamsis got a tremendous jump on the green flag to outdistance Bourgeois in turn #2, but his lead was short lived as Bourgeois reclaimed the lead for good on lap #18 with Rankin taking second and Yves McCray (#58) of Miramichi crossing the line in third.

In TigerCat action, the afternoon belonged to the two-car Gautreau racing team out of Shediac with Daniel Gautreau (#20) driving his Roland’s On the Spot Welding Honda to his first career victory in the 11 car, 15-lap feature ahead of teammate Pierre Gautreau (#99) and Gaetan Boudreau (#71) also of Shediac. For Daniel, it was sweet revenge on Pierre who had earlier captured both the 10-lap heat and semi-final just ahead of his #20 racecar.

In Thundercat action, Josh Simon (#71) of Bouctouche came back in fine form after a one-week layoff capturing third position in both the 10-lap heat and semi-final before putting it all together in the 25-lap feature. Simon drove his G&R Auto Service Honda to victory lane in the 12-car main event finishing ahead of current points leader Chris Powers (#26) of Memramcook and Eldon Campbell (#17) of Moncton, who was first to cross the stripe in both the heat in semi-final.

The Streetstock feature saw defending points champion Rémi Gaudet (#75) of Grand Barachois capture his second 25-lap feature in a row aboard his Pine Needles Golf Chevrolet racecar. Gaudet captured the feature win ahead of Norm Richard (#38) of Grand Barachois and Gérard Doiron (#15) of Haute Aboujagane. Gaudet had earlier claimed the win in the 10-lap heat and then had a front row for the first win of the season for Mark Williams (#24) of Cocagne in the semi-final.

Next Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m., the CFS will host the Eastern Motorsports Quarterly Invitational "250" which will include the third leg of the Maritime Sportsman Super Series with a 100-lap feature, as well as 50-lap features for Streetstock, TigerCat and Thundercat racecars.

Outlaw Go-Kart’ League action will begin on Saturday, June 30th and is open to anyone over the height of 52 inches.  A special introductory rate of $30 for the entire evening is in effect for anyone who is pre registered before June 30th.  Call the speedway for details.

Wormell captures first Maritime Sportsman Super Series win
as Powers and Gaudet record grand slams

GRAND BARACHOIS, NEW BRUNSWICK – Miramichi’s Wayne Wormell (#23) translated two weeks worth of hard work by his crew into his first win in the Maritime Sportsman Super Series 75-lap feature during Maple Leaf Foods ‘Race for the Cure’ action at the Centre for Speed (CFS) here on Sunday afternoon. Meanwhile, both Chris Powers (#26) of Memramcook and Rémi Gaudet (#75) of Grand Barachois recorded grand slams in their respective divisions.

Wormell started the day on the right foot when he drove his Highway #11 Truck and Trailer Monte Carlo to a first place finish in the 10-lap heat ahead of last year’s Sportsman Super Series and CFS Sportsman champion, Gary Hicks (#13) of Moncton. Meanwhile, Luc Bourgeois (#88) of Memramcook took home first place honours in the first heat outdistancing Freddy Prosser (#31) of Shenstown at the finish line.

Bourgeois therefore had the pole for the start of the 75-lap feature with Wormell starting second. However, Bourgeois accepted the ‘pole challenge’ and started at the tail end of the field with a chance to capture some extra cash for each racecar he was able to pass. Furthermore, after a coin toss, the top eight cars were inverted which meant that Wormell started the event in the seventh position with Corey Little (#83) of Rowley, N.B. inheriting the pole position.

The 75-lap feature, which was slowed by only three cautions, saw Wormell and Bourgeois methodically making their way towards the front of the field. On a 10th lap restart, Wormell got a great jump on the green flag and one lap later was able to pass Claude Gaudet (#22) of Barachois on the outside for the lead. For the next 64 laps, Wormell built on his and crossed the finish line first, outdistancing Ron Lane (#46) of Salisbury and Bourgeois.

It was also a memorable afternoon for Chris Powers (#26) of Memramcook who drove his Coast Tire - Dieppe Cavalier to a grand slam in Thundercat racing action including only his second career feature win. Powers was first to cross the finish line in the 10-lap heat and semifinal before taking top honours in the 35-lap feature ahead of Rod Pettigrew (#77) of Amherst and rookie Wilfred Simon (#10) of Bouctouche.

Rémi Gaudet (#75) of Grand Barachois continued the defense of his Streetstock championship by also recording a grand slam aboard his Lou Door Ventures Chevrolet ‘crate’ engine racecar. Gaudet recorded his first feature win of the season ahead of Gérard Doiron (#15) of Haute Aboujagane and Mark Ferguson (#41) of Saint John. Gaudet had earlier captured first place honours in the 10-lap semi-final, after having been forced to restart at the back of the field just before the halfway mark, to go along with his heat win.

In TigerCat action, rookie Gaetan Boudreau (#71) of Shediac drove his Lou Door Ventures Honda to his first career win in the 35-lap feature edging out Gary Stewart (#43) of Emerald, PEI and defending champion Gérald Brun (#33) of Moncton at the finish line in a race that featured 14 starters. In the 10-lap semifinal, Stewart claimed the first place hardware while Brun was first to cross the strip in the 10-lap heat.

Due to a lack of racecars, the scheduled 75-lap Maritime Late Model Pro Stock event was cancelled.

Half of the proceed from the day’s 50/50 draw will be donated to the Garland family of Lakeville who have two family members currently battling cancer as part of the CFS’ ‘Race for the Cure’.

Brun records TigerCats grand slam
while Maillet wins Sportsman feature

GRAND BARACHOIS, NEW BRUNSWICK – Defending TigerCat division points champion, Gérald Brun (#33) of Moncton started the 2007 points championship chase exactly where he left off by recording a grand slam including a win in the 25-lap feature during Champlain Coastal Inn action at the Centre for Speed (CFS) here on Sunday afternoon. Meanwhile, Marcel Maillet (#25) of Bouctouche staked an early claim to the Sportsman crown be capturing the 25-lap feature.

Brun was first the cross the finish line in all three TigerCat races aboard his Multi Rad / Midway Auto Parts Honda Prelude in action that featured six rookies in the 12 car-field. Pierre Gautreau (#99) of Shediac, last year’s rookie of the year in the division, also enjoyed a good afternoon with a second place finish in the heat to go with a third place showing in the semi-final before mechanical difficulties forced him out of the feature as he was chasing leader Brun. Marcel Goguen (#56) of Grande Digue took home second place honours in the feature followed by Daniel Gautreau (#20) of Shediac, who also recorded a second place finish in the semi-final.

In Sportsman action, Marcel Maillet (#25) of Bouctouche recorded his first feature win in over two years aboard his 3M Trim Line Monte Carlo while Yves McCray (#58) of Miramichi and Luc Bourgeois (#88) of Memramcook fought a fierce battle for second through the 25-lap event with McCray crossing the finish line in second followed closely by Bourgeois. Maillet thanked the dedicated effort of his pit crew for the win after a hectic two-week period of work to replace the racecar’s engine which had gone up in smoke during the later half of the first Super Sportsman event of the 2007 season on May 13th. Maillet had earlier captured the win in the 10-lap heat while Bourgeois was first to cross the finish line in the semi-final to go along with his third place finish in the heat.

Meanwhile in Streetstock action, Norm Richard (#38) of Grand Barachois enjoyed a great first outing aboard his Petro Canada Ford claiming the win in the 25-lap main event to go along with first place in the heat and second place in the semi-final. And every step of the way, Richard had defending points champ Rémi Gaudet (#75) of Grand Barachois either right on his back bumper or, as in the case of the semi-final, edging him out at the finish line. Gérard Doiron (#15) of Haute Aboujagane was third across the stripe in the feature and heat.

In Thundercat action, Josh Simon (#71) of Bouctouche got a tremendous jump in his G&R Auto Service Honda on a late restart in the 25-lap feature to bolt ahead of Ron Pettigrew (#77) of Amherst and hold on for the win in the 10-car field, which featured no less than eight rookies. It was only Simon’s second career feature win after he recorded one during 2006. Pettigrew had to settle for second with Chris Powers (#26) of Memramcook coming in a close third. Simon had earlier captured the win in the 10-lap heat while Ovide Brun (#66) of Barachois took home top honours in the semi-final.

This first points racing event attracted 50 drivers from throughout southeastern and northern New Brunswick and northern Nova Scotia, including 15 rookies.  More drivers are expected this weekend as the CENTRE will host it's second Maritime Super Series Event - the Maple Leaf Foods ‘Race for the Cure 150’ – a Maritime Super Series event, which will include a Maritime Late Model Pro Stock 75-lap feature and a Sportsman Super Series 75-lap main event along with regular points racing in the TigerCat and Thundercat divisions.   Proceeds of the 50/50 will help support local families affected by cancer.
